this week has been hit or miss at the hospital. yesterday 3 people died before 9am, one while i was trying to start an iv on them. it's quite a culture shock - i have never seen anyone die in the states, so this is new to me and i'm not sure how to process it yet. i told the guys here yesterday that i'm going to need a debriefing session when i get back. today has been more productive and i'm starting to feel like i'm helping more than hindering. i felt like a phlebotomist today with the amount of blood i drew, and i've become buddies with the lab guy. Lab guy, pharmacist (nicholas), Finley, and geoffrey (lead nurse) have all expressed concern about my marital status. "why you are not married? you should get married!" The lab guy told me to move here, marry a zambian and have lots of zambian babies. i told him that my mom would miss me too much and he said, "why, she only wants white babies?" um, no. she would just miss me i think.
we went to church on sunday and it was almost 3 hours long. jack recorded it, i'm sure some of you will enjoy the music. when we had a break in the rain, we drove out to kundalila falls and hiked to the bottom of it. if you've never swam under a 230ft waterfall, you need to. i took tons of pictures and video, which i'm sure will be posted on facebook as soon as i get back.
in summary, life is good. we pretty much hang out with the guys (i've been calling them "the boys" but i don't think they like it) whenever we're not at the hospital, and they've been awesome.
abbie is currently whipping up some chicken curry right now, and i think i'm going to take a stab at zambian banana bread tonight. it's almost "14 hours," which means time to get back to work. i'm enjoying the 2 hour lunch hour though. everyone is pretty concerned about us not working too much, and getting enough sleep. not too different from the lectures i get back home... :)
i hope all is well!
peace
You're not married yet because boys are too much of a hassle.
ReplyDeleteMiss your face!
If you married and moved to Zambia me and your mom would miss you.
ReplyDeleteUm, you are married.... to me!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, even THEY think you need to work less and get more sleep :)
ReplyDeleteNice profile, pic, by the way. Whoever took that did a real genius job of framing and light management...
Glad to hear all is well!
